1885 · 19th century

Telaga Said is an oil field in Langkat Regency, North Sumatra, Indonesia, the first commercially productive oil field in the Dutch East Indies. Oil was struck there in 1885 by the Dutch planter Aeilko Jans Zijlker, who obtained a concession from the Sultan of Langkat. His venture led to the founding of the Royal Dutch Petroleum Company in 1890, later part of Royal Dutch Shell.
