Teresa of Portugal, Queen of León

1176–1250 · 13th century

Teresa of Portugal was a daughter of Sancho I of Portugal who married her cousin Alfonso IX of León in 1191. The marriage was annulled on grounds of kinship, and she later retired to the monastery of Lorvão. In 1230, after Alfonso's death, she negotiated with Berengaria the Treaty of Benavente, by which her daughters gave up their claim to León. She was beatified in 1705.
