Alfonso IX of León

1171–1230 · 13th century

Alfonso IX was king of León from 1188 to 1230. In his first year he summoned the Cortes of León, which included townsmen alongside nobles and clergy and is often cited as the earliest European parliament of its kind. He took Cáceres, Mérida and Badajoz from the Almohads, and his son Ferdinand III united León and Castile.
