1851–1936 · 19th century

The Crystal Palace was a building of cast iron and glass designed by Joseph Paxton to house the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park, London, in 1851. After the exhibition it was rebuilt in enlarged form at Sydenham in south London, where it served for exhibitions and entertainment until it was destroyed by fire in 1936.
