The East Is Red

modern lyrics 1942; definitive version 1964 · 20th century · Also known as 东方红, Dongfang Hong

"The East Is Red" is a revolutionary song of the Chinese Communist Party. Its melody came from a peasant love song of the Loess Plateau, "Bai Ma Diao" (White Horse Tune), also called "Zhima You" (Sesame Oil), which was widely sung around Yan'an in the 1930s and whose words often changed with the singer.
