The Song of the Volga Boatmen

collected 1860 or 1861; published 1866 · 19th century · Also known as Эй, ухнем!, Ey, ukhnyem!

"The Song of the Volga Boatmen" is a traditional Russian song of the burlaks, the barge-haulers of the Volga River, who dragged boats upstream from the bank. In Russian it is named after its refrain, a hauling call. Ilya Repin's painting Barge Haulers on the Volga shows such burlaks at their labour in Tsarist Russia.
