Tijikja
Tijikja is a town in central Mauritania, capital of the Tagant region, built around a palm oasis. Founded in the 17th century, it became a main centre of the Emirate of Tagant. The French colonial administrator Xavier Coppolani occupied it in 1905 and was assassinated there the same year. Its old quarter of stone houses is a reminder of the Saharan caravan towns.
