Tsiomeko

1828–1843 · 19th century

Tsiomeko was a queen of the Sakalava kingdom of Boina in north-western Madagascar. Driven from the mainland by the expanding Merina kingdom, she and her followers took refuge on the island of Nosy Be, and in 1840 she accepted French protection, which led to France's annexation of Nosy Be and neighbouring islands in 1841. She died young in 1843.
