Tzitzak

d. c. 750 · 8th century · Also known as Irene of Khazaria

Tzitzak was a Khazar princess, a daughter of the khagan Bihar, who in 732 married the future Byzantine emperor Constantine V and was baptised as Irene. The marriage sealed an alliance between Byzantium and the Khazars against the Umayyad Caliphate. Their son reigned as Leo IV from 775 to 780 and was known as "the Khazar", and her wedding dress gave its name to a Byzantine court garment, the tzitzakion.
