Tzintzuntzan
Tzintzuntzan was the capital of the Purépecha (Tarascan) state on the north-eastern shore of Lake Pátzcuaro in Michoacán, western Mexico. By the 15th century it had become the political and religious centre of the kingdom, with tens of thousands of inhabitants and monumental yácata platforms that still stand on its terrace above the lake. It lost its role after the Spanish conquest of the 1520s, when Pátzcuaro became the seat of the new bishopric.
