Uluj Ali
Uluj Ali was an Italian-born Ottoman corsair and admiral, born in Calabria as Giovanni Dionigi Galeni and captured by Barbary corsairs as a young man. Converting to Islam, he rose to be beylerbey of Algiers from 1568. At Lepanto in 1571 he commanded the Ottoman left wing and escaped with much of his squadron; as Kapudan Pasha he then rebuilt the fleet and retook Tunis in 1574.
