Upolu
Upolu is the second-largest and most populous island of Samoa, home to the capital Apia. Its high chiefly titles were central to Samoan politics, and in the 19th century Apia became the base of rival German, British and American interests. Under the Tripartite Convention of 1899 it became part of German Samoa, and New Zealand occupied it in 1914, before Samoa's independence in 1962.
