Uzama

The uzama were the hereditary noble chiefs of the Benin kingdom, who held significant power under the earlier Ogiso system. Accounts of the Benin Empire describe how the Oba dynasty centralised royal authority against them, and how Oba Ewuare the Great removed the uzama chiefs' power to appoint the Oba. They nonetheless remained an important institutional check within Benin's governance.
