Viernes Negro

1983 · 20th century · Also known as Black Friday (Venezuela)

Viernes Negro, or Black Friday, was 18 February 1983, when the Venezuelan government of Luis Herrera Campins devalued the bolívar and introduced exchange controls after falling oil prices and heavy foreign debt had drained the reserves. It ended two decades of a stable, strong currency and is remembered as the start of Venezuela's long economic crisis.
