Vierlande
The Vierlande ("four lands") is a fertile marshland district on the Elbe south-east of Hamburg, named after its four parishes. Pledged by the dukes of Saxe-Lauenburg, it was taken in 1420 by Hamburg and Lübeck, which governed it jointly with Bergedorf until 1868, when it passed wholly to Hamburg. It is known for market gardening of vegetables and flowers and for its distinctive farmhouses and costume.
