White Terror (Hungary)

1919–1921 · 20th century

The White Terror in Hungary was a wave of counter-revolutionary violence in 1919–1921 after the fall of the Hungarian Soviet Republic. Officer detachments of Miklós Horthy's National Army killed, imprisoned and tortured thousands of suspected communists, socialists and Jews. Many opponents fled abroad, some to the Serbian-occupied Baranya region, and the violence accompanied Horthy's rise to regent in 1920.
