Wollo famine

1973–1974 · 20th century

The Wollo famine was a severe famine in the Wollo region of Ethiopia in 1973–1974 that killed many thousands of people. The imperial government initially denied and concealed its scale. Accounts of the Ethiopian Empire describe how the famine crystallised grievances among students, labour unions and the military, contributing directly to the revolution that ended the monarchy in 1974.
