Yamamoto Tsunetomo

1659–1719 · 17th century

Yamamoto Tsunetomo was a samurai of the Saga domain in Kyushu who served the Nabeshima lord Mitsushige. When his lord died in 1700 and retainers were forbidden to follow him in death, he became a Buddhist monk and retired to a hermitage. His conversations there with the younger samurai Tashiro Tsuramoto were recorded as Hagakure, a classic of samurai ethics.
