Nabeshima Naomasa

1815–1871 · 19th century · Also known as Nabeshima Kanso

Nabeshima Naomasa was daimyo of the Saga domain in Kyushu from 1830 to 1861. Responsible for guarding Nagasaki, he promoted Western learning, built Japan's first reverberatory furnace in 1850 and cast iron cannon, giving Saga some of the most modern weapons in Japan. These helped the imperial side in the Boshin War of 1868, and Saga men played a leading part in the Meiji government.
