Baramba State

1305 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Baramba

A small princely state on the Mahanadi in central Odisha, one of the Orissa Tributary States until 1948.

Origins

Tradition dates the state to the early 14th century, but little is reliably known about its founding.

Rule and society

Baramba was a small agricultural state west of Cuttack, known for its handloom weaving. It paid tribute to the Marathas and from 1803 to the British as one of the Orissa Tributary Mahals. Its internal history is poorly recorded.

Decline and legacy

Baramba merged into Orissa on 1 January 1948 and is now in Cuttack district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
