Bhadrawah State

1400 CE – 1846 CE (approx.) · capital Bhadrawah

A small hill state in a high valley off the Chenab, contested by Chamba and Jammu before it became part of Jammu and Kashmir.

Origins

Bhadrawah was ruled by local Rajput chiefs; tradition dates the state to around 1400, but its early history is poorly recorded.

Rule and society

Set in a green upland valley, Bhadrawah was for long periods a tributary or dependency of Chamba State. Its people spoke Bhadarwahi, and its Vasuki Nag temple is an important local shrine. Little detail of its government survives.

Decline and legacy

Bhadrawah passed to Gulab Singh of Jammu and became part of Jammu and Kashmir (princely state) in 1846. It is now a town in Doda district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
