Canton of Valencia

1873 CE – 1873 CE · capital Valencia

A federalist canton proclaimed in Valencia during the Cantonal Rebellion of 1873 and suppressed within weeks.

Origins

In July 1873 radical federalists in Valencia, frustrated by the Spanish First Republic's failure to build a federal state, formed a revolutionary junta and proclaimed the city a sovereign canton, joining the rising begun in the Canton of Cartagena.

Rule and society

The junta took over city government and local forces and declared its intention to belong to a federal Spain built by free cantons. Like the other cantons, it had little time to put any programme into practice.

Decline and legacy

Government troops under General Arsenio Martínez Campos besieged and bombarded the city, and the canton surrendered in early August 1873.
