Esuvii

300 BCE – 56 BCE (approx.)

Little-known Gallic people of lower Normandy subdued by Caesar's legate Crassus during the conquest of Armorica.

Origins

Caesar mentions the Esuvii among the Armorican peoples brought under Roman control by Publius Crassus in 57 BCE, and notes that a legion wintered in their territory in 54 BCE. Their exact location is debated, but most scholars place them in the Orne region around Sées or Exmes.

Rule and society

Nothing is known of their rulers or institutions; their name may be linked to the Gallic god Esus.

Decline and legacy

After the conquest they disappear from the record, and their land seems to have been absorbed into the civitas of the Sagii, whose town became Sées.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
