Imperial Abbey of Irsee

1692 CE – 1802 CE · capital Irsee

Benedictine abbey in the Allgäu that gained immediacy late and became known for its scholarship in science and mathematics.

Origins

Irsee Abbey was founded around 1182 by the margraves of Ronsberg as a Benedictine monastery near Kaufbeuren. Over the centuries the abbots expanded their rights, and in 1692 the abbey bought the jurisdiction and was recognised as an imperial abbey, immediate to the Empire.

Rule and society

The abbot ruled a small territory of villages as a prelate of the Empire, with a seat on the Swabian bench of prelates. The monks rebuilt the abbey in baroque style and maintained a school and a respected natural sciences cabinet; Ulrich Weiss, a monk of Irsee, was a noted philosopher and mathematician of the Catholic Enlightenment.

Decline and legacy

The abbey was secularised in 1802 and its lands given to the Electorate of Bavaria. The buildings later served as an asylum, whose patients were victims of Nazi euthanasia killings, and are now a conference centre.
