Kingdom of Raigama

1521 CE – 1538 CE · capital Raigama

A minor Sinhalese kingdom of south-western Sri Lanka created by the division of Kotte in 1521 and reabsorbed less than two decades later.

Origins

Raigama was formed in 1521, when the Kingdom of Kotte was split among the three sons of Vijayabahu VI after they killed him. Pararajasinghe, also called Raigam Bandara, received the Raigama district south of Kotte, while his brothers took Kotte itself and the Kingdom of Sitawaka.

Rule and society

Very little is known about government in Raigama. It was a small territory of rice and cinnamon land between Kotte and Sitawaka, and its ruler was overshadowed by his more powerful brothers.

Decline and legacy

On Raigam Bandara's death in 1538 the territory was taken by Mayadunne of Sitawaka, and the kingdom ceased to exist.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
