Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic
Origins
After a Soviet ultimatum in June 1940, the Red Army occupied the Republic of Latvia. A rigged election produced a parliament that requested admission to the Soviet Union, and Latvia was annexed in August 1940. German occupation followed in 1941-1944, before Soviet rule returned.
Rule and society
Soviet power brought nationalisation, collectivisation and mass deportations in June 1941 and March 1949. Riga became a major industrial centre, producing radios, railway carriages and the RAF minibuses, which drew large numbers of Russian-speaking workers, so that Latvians fell to barely half the population. Communist leaders included Arvīds Pelše and Augusts Voss, and a 1959 purge removed national communists.
Decline and legacy
The Popular Front of Latvia mobilised mass support, including the Baltic Way human chain of 1989. On 4 May 1990 the Supreme Council under Anatolijs Gorbunovs declared the restoration of independence, completed on 21 August 1991, restoring the Republic of Latvia.
