Makrai State

1663 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Makrai

A small Gond principality in the Narmada valley, one of the few princely states inside the Central Provinces.

Origins

Makrai was held by a Raj Gond family in the hills south of the Narmada, in what became Hoshangabad district. The register dates the state to 1663, though its early history is known mainly from tradition.

Rule and society

The Raja ruled a small, heavily forested territory of tribal villages. In the British period Makrai was a feudatory state attached to the Central Provinces, and it is recorded as one of the smallest of its kind. Few further details are widely known.

Decline and legacy

Makrai merged into the Central Provinces and Berar in 1948, later Madhya Pradesh. Its lands lie in Harda district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
