Sanjeli State

1600 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Sanjeli

A minor chiefship in the forested hills of eastern Gujarat, one of the small estates of the Rewa Kantha country.

Origins

Sanjeli was a small estate in the hills of eastern Gujarat, near the border with Malwa, held by a local chiefly family from around 1600. Its founding is poorly documented.

Rule and society

The ruler governed a few villages with a largely Bhil population and, in the British period, came under the Rewa Kantha Agency. Standard references record little else.

Decline and legacy

Sanjeli was merged into Bombay Province in 1948 and became part of Gujarat in 1960, in present Dahod district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
