Abbey of Saint Martial, Limoges

848–1791 · 9th century

The Abbey of Saint Martial was a Benedictine monastery in Limoges, founded in 848 around the tomb of Saint Martial, the first bishop of the city. From the tenth to the twelfth century it was among the great abbeys of southern France, known for its library and its manuscripts of early polyphonic music; the chronicler Adémar of Chabannes worked there. The abbey was suppressed and demolished after the Revolution.
