Acre War

1899–1903 · 19th century · Also known as Acrean Revolution

The Acre War was a conflict over the rubber-rich region of Acre in the Amazon, then claimed by Bolivia but settled mainly by Brazilian rubber tappers. Brazilian settlers under José Plácido de Castro rose against Bolivian rule and defeated its forces in 1902–1903. By the Treaty of Petrópolis of 1903 Bolivia ceded Acre to Brazil in return for money and a railway.
