Act of Mediation

1803 · 19th century

The Act of Mediation was the constitution imposed on Switzerland by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1803, replacing the unstable Helvetic Republic after civil strife in 1802. It restored the cantons in a new confederation of nineteen, including newly created cantons such as Vaud, Aargau and St Gallen, while keeping the equality of citizens and the end of subject territories. It lasted until Napoleon's fall in 1813.
