Adolf Frederick, King of Sweden

1710–1771 · 18th century

Adolf Frederick, King of Sweden, was a prince of the house of Holstein-Gottorp who served as prince-bishop of Lübeck from 1727 to 1750. Chosen heir to the Swedish throne in 1743 under Russian pressure, he became king in 1751. His reign fell in Sweden's Age of Liberty, when the Riksdag held real power, and his attempts to strengthen the crown failed.
