Aelia Capitolina

c. 130–4th century · 4th century

Aelia Capitolina was the Roman colony founded by the emperor Hadrian on the ruins of Jerusalem around 130 CE, with a temple to Jupiter Capitolinus. The plan is often seen as a cause of the Bar Kokhba revolt of 132–135, after which Jews were barred from the city. The name remained in official use for centuries, surviving in early Islamic times as Iliya.
