d. 135 · 2nd century · Also known as Bar Kokhba, Simon bar Kosiba, Bar Kosiba

Simon bar Kokhba, born Simon bar Kosiba, led the Jewish revolt against Rome in Judaea from 132 to 135 CE. Hailed by some as a messianic figure, 'son of the star', he styled himself Nasi (prince) of Israel and ran an administration known from letters found in Judaean Desert caves. He died when the Romans took his last stronghold at Betar.
