2nd century · 2nd century

Sextus Julius Severus was a Roman general and senator from Dalmatia who governed Britain in the early 130s CE. The emperor Hadrian transferred him to Judaea to suppress the Bar Kokhba revolt, which he did by avoiding pitched battles and reducing the rebel strongholds one by one. He was rewarded with triumphal honours and later governed the province of Syria Palaestina.
