Æthelred, Lord of the Mercians

d. 911 · 10th century

Æthelred was the ruler of English Mercia from about 881 until his death in 911, after the Danes had taken the eastern half of the kingdom. He accepted the overlordship of Alfred the Great of Wessex, married Alfred's daughter Æthelflæd and led Mercian forces against the Vikings. He used the title lord rather than king, and his wife succeeded him.
