Agüeybaná II

d. 1511 · 16th century

Agüeybaná II was a Taíno cacique of Puerto Rico, successor to his brother Agüeybaná I as leading chief of the island. In 1511, after the Taíno learned that the Spaniards were not immortal, he led a general uprising against forced labour under the encomienda system. The revolt was crushed by Juan Ponce de León and Agüeybaná II was killed.
