Ahmedabad is the largest city of Gujarat in western India, on the Sabarmati river. It was founded in 1411 by Ahmad Shah I of the Gujarat Sultanate as his capital and became famous for its mosques, stepwells and textile trade. Later a centre of cotton mills, it was where Mahatma Gandhi founded his Sabarmati Ashram, and its old city became India's first UNESCO World Heritage city in 2017.
