Radhanpur State

1753 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Radhanpur

A Babi Pathan Nawabi state in northern Gujarat, founded by a Mughal officer on the edge of the Rann of Kutch.

Origins

Kamal-ud-din Khan Babi, known as Jawan Mard Khan, was a Mughal officer in Gujarat from the Babi family that also ruled Junagadh State. After the Marathas took Ahmedabad in 1753 he secured Radhanpur and nearby districts as his own principality.

Rule and society

The Nawabs ruled a dry territory on the trade route towards Kutch and Sindh. Under British protection Radhanpur was an 11-gun salute state, first under the Palanpur Agency and later the Western India States Agency, with a largely Hindu farming population.

Decline and legacy

After accession to India Radhanpur was merged into Bombay State in 1948 and has been part of Gujarat since 1960; it is now in Patan district.
