Al Qasimi

Also known as Qawasim

The Al Qasimi, or Qawasim, are an Arab dynasty and tribal confederation of the southern Gulf, centred on Ras al-Khaimah and Sharjah. In the 18th century they built a maritime power on both shores of the Gulf, which Britain attacked in 1809 and 1819 in campaigns against alleged piracy, leading to the General Maritime Treaty of 1820. Branches of the family still rule Sharjah and Ras al-Khaimah.
