Imperial Airways

1924–1939 · 20th century

Imperial Airways was the British long-range airline formed in 1924 to link the British Empire by air. Its routes to India, Africa and Australia needed landing grounds across the Middle East, and in 1932 it opened a rest house and airfield at Sharjah on the Gulf. It merged with British Airways Ltd in 1939 to form BOAC.
