Alash (party)

1917–1920 · 20th century · Also known as Alash Party

Alash was a Kazakh national party founded in 1917 by intellectuals including Alikhan Bukeikhanov, Akhmet Baitursynov and Mirzhakip Dulatov, and named after the legendary ancestor of the Kazakhs. It sought Kazakh autonomy within a democratic Russian federation and formed the Alash Orda government, which lasted from December 1917 until the Bolsheviks dissolved it in 1920. Many of its leaders were later killed in Stalin's purges.
