Semey

Also known as Semipalatinsk

Semey, known until 2007 as Semipalatinsk, is a city on the Irtysh river in north-eastern Kazakhstan, founded as a Russian fort in 1718. It was the seat of the Alash Orda government in 1917–1920 and a centre of Kazakh literary life associated with Abai Kunanbaev. From 1949 to 1989 the nearby Semipalatinsk Test Site was the Soviet Union's main nuclear weapons testing ground, with lasting effects on the region's health.
