Alaşehir

Also known as Philadelphia (Lydia)

Alaşehir is a town in Manisa Province in western Turkey. As Philadelphia, founded by the Attalid kings of Pergamon in the 2nd century BCE, it was one of the seven churches of Asia named in the Book of Revelation. It held out as a Byzantine enclave long after the surrounding country fell to the Turkish beyliks, and surrendered to the Ottoman sultan Bayezid I around 1390.
