Albert II, Duke of Saxony

c. 1250–1298 · 13th century

Albert II was an Ascanian Duke of Saxony who ruled jointly with his brother John I and then John's sons until the partition of 1296, which gave him the lands around Wittenberg on the Elbe, the Duchy of Saxe-Wittenberg, while his nephews received Saxe-Lauenburg. A supporter of Rudolf of Habsburg, he married Rudolf's daughter Agnes. His line later won the Saxon electoral dignity, confirmed by the Golden Bull of 1356.
