Albert III, Elector of Saxony

c. 1375–1422 · 15th century

Albert III was Duke of Saxe-Wittenberg and Elector of Saxony from 1419 to 1422, the last elector of the Ascanian line. He died childless in 1422, reportedly after a fire at a hunting lodge, and Emperor Sigismund then granted the electorate in 1423 to Frederick the Warlike, Margrave of Meissen, of the house of Wettin, passing over the claims of the Ascanians of Saxe-Lauenburg.
