Albert, King of Sweden

c. 1338–1412 · 14th century · Also known as Albert of Sweden

Albert, King of Sweden, also known as Albert of Mecklenburg, reigned from 1364 to 1389, after Swedish nobles deposed Magnus Eriksson and offered him the crown. His reliance on German advisers made him unpopular, and the nobles turned to Margaret I of Denmark and Norway, whose forces defeated and captured him at Åsle in 1389. Released in 1395, he later ruled as Duke of Mecklenburg.
