Albertine Rift
The Albertine Rift is the western branch of the East African Rift, running from Lake Albert south through Lakes Edward, Kivu and Tanganyika along the borders of the Democratic Republic of the Congo with Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania. Its Ugandan section, the Albertine Graben around Lake Albert, holds commercial oil reserves discovered in 2006, which led to plans for an export pipeline through Tanzania. The rift also holds some of Africa's richest wildlife.
