Alidius Tjarda van Starkenborgh Stachouwer
Alidius Tjarda van Starkenborgh Stachouwer was governor-general of the Dutch East Indies from 1936, the last before the Japanese conquest. A conservative diplomat, he presided over a colony that rejected nationalist demands for autonomy such as the Soetardjo petition of 1936. He stayed at his post when Japan invaded in 1942 and spent the rest of the war in Japanese internment. He later served as Dutch ambassador to France and representative to NATO.
