Alice Seeley Harris

1870–1970 · 20th century

Alice Seeley Harris was an English Baptist missionary in the Congo Free State whose photographs of mutilated Congolese, taken from 1904 at the Baringa mission, became key evidence in the campaign against Leopold II's regime. With her husband John Harris she showed them at meetings across Britain and the United States for the Congo Reform Association, and she is seen as a pioneer of humanitarian photography.
